Tom Rice is the Heritage Hunter
- My focus is 19th and 20th Century America, especially
the MidWest
- Tracing lines back to origins in Canada, Ireland,
Scotland or England
- A particular strength of mine is applying the research
and analytical skills I learned from my scientific training to difficult
genealogical problems.
- All projects end with a professionally written report
giving full source citations and the reasoning for how problems were
solved.
I am a professional genealogy researcher and teacher. The Board for Certification
of Genealogists (BCG) has evaluated a portfolio of my work and and allowed
me to use the title "Certified Genealogist(CG)". From my location
in the Minneapolis / St. Paul metro area, I have ready access to all of
the regional repositories, and can travel as needed throughout the upper
Midwest. I specialize in applying analytical methodologies and efficient
research strategies to difficult genealogical problems. When attacking
a problem, I use a broad array of record types and tools. I am an effective
communicator who also enjoys teaching and one-on-one coaching. To me it
is a joy to help others enjoy their genealogical pursuits by helping them
get better at it.
Thoughts on
Genealogy, Family History & Heritage Hunting
To
my mind these are all part of the same continuum. Genealogy taken to its
fullest is much more than just the sterile facts associated with the births,
marriages and deaths of our ancestors. At its fullest, it is the detailed
story of our ancestors' lives. A chain of these life stories becomes the
history of a family. To be complete, a Family History should also
give the reader a picture of the times, places and buildings where our
ancestors lived and worked. It is from this history of our families that
we learn what they did to bring about the family and world we now live
in. We need to know our Family History in order to fully appreciate our
Heritage. Our genealogy studies thus lead to our Family History and thence
to an appreciate for our Heritage.
Thus Heritage Hunting is Genealogy and Family History
taken to the fullest extent.
