Title: The Law, the Court, and Probates From a Genealogist’s View – session 3
Location: Continuing Education and Conference Center, U of M, St. Paul Campus, 1890 Buford Ave St Paul, MN
Description: Knowing the laws of a specific place, at a specific time in history, is key to fully understanding the lives of your ancestors’. This knowledge helps to answer such questions as: Could women own property? At what age could a boy marry without parental consent? Who inherited if there was no will? What were the grounds for divorce? And because legal issues were often played out in court, the ability to find and comprehend court records is essential to understanding how the laws of the day impacted your ancestors in civil or criminal issues. This course will provide you with a road map that details how to uncover the laws, court records, and legal questions that shed light on family history. The discussion will include issues related to inheritance and estate distribution, as well as wills and probate records, which are often regarded as one of the best tools for deciphering family relationships. Of the two, probate files are most useful. They can help to reveal ancestral occupations, economic status, and intimate details about the fabric of everyday life at the time. By the end of the course, you will have a better understanding of the content of specific legal records, where to find these records, and how to interpret them so as to get the greatest perspective on your family history.
Start Time: 10:00
Date: 2012-04-18
End Time: 12:00
